District League play is one of the largely unsung, but hugely important areas of volleyball involvement in Scotland. There are many locations across the length and breadth of the Country where District League play flourishes, and one of the SVA’s targets for the next development period is to highlight the work being done, and stimulate further growth in this area.
Volleyball is a target sport in Glasgow. The City Council consistently supports volleyball events, and promotes the activities of the National League Clubs, but did you know it also works hard to help develop District level play?
There’s been a quiet revolution in the structures of the Glasgow District Association which has seen the appointment of a new DL Chairman, who has re-energised the DL picture. Raymond MacHugh got involved with Glasgow District Volleyball when he turned up at Scotstoun Volleyball Centre in response to an advert he had seen about recreational play.
The advert insisted you could get fit, have fun, and meet new people by getting to Scotstoun for the recreational sessions …… Raymond showed up, achieved all that was promised, and fell in love with our game. A couple of years later he responded positively to the plea for help, and has kick-started a process which will see the recreational sessions flourish and grow over the coming months.
The target is to re-establish a District League with regular home and away fixtures, in addition to the regular ‘drop in’ recreational sessions. A District League did exist in Glasgow, it still exists in several other regions, and with the enthusiasm and commitment being shown by Raymond and his committee it will happen soon.
