The UKCC Programme isn’t new, the phase I sports have been involved in the process of developing and delivering it for some time. Volleyball is a phase 3 sport, and we are right smack in the middle of our UKCC journey. This past weekend saw our first pilot course delivered in Scotland. It was targeted at our Staff Tutors, and held at Inverclyde.
There were 15 of us, testing the processes, sampling the material, getting our heads around the paperwork, pulling the whole thing apart, then putting it back together again with solutions to the inevitable ‘teething problems’. It was hugely enjoyable, very demanding, and ultimately rewarding for Scottish Volleyball.
The UKCC Level I course replaces our old Introductory Award. It places a much more consistent emphasis on developing the ‘How 2’ coach skills of the participants. The old award was two days in length, the new award is three days, with the last one being the assessment day. This new format is pretty much what most sports that are involved in the UKCC programme have organised….and that’s pretty much all sports.
Our intention is to ‘roll out’ the new UKCC Programme, and bring a course somewhere near you! This year there are again a series of ‘Development’ dates in the SVA calendar. This means there are weekends which do not have National League fixtures assigned to them. There are a host of ‘other’ things happening on these dates, they appear at regular intervals throughout the season, and we propose to present a level I UKCC Volleyball Award each time they do. That means we have initial plans for four ‘roll out’ courses.

- Aberdeen in February
- Edinburgh in March

The Inverclyde Pilot Course was tough, and demanding, but once again Scottish Volleyball proved that it is populated by some extraordinary people. The Staff Tutors were great. The gym reverberated with laughter and outstanding examples of coahcing practice, the theory sessions were full of probing questions, the few ‘downtime’ moments were used to discuss club play and the development of our game, and all in all it was so very very enjoyable.
Well done and thank you to all of the colleagues who participated so well and gave so freely of their time and energy. More information on the UKCC programme will follow…..the journey continues.
