Seven teams contested the women’s Cup, with the competition being decided on the day – all teams playing one another in two set matches, scored to 21. BUCS Tier 1 teams Aberdeen and St Andrews and Premier League Edinburgh demonstrated a clear superiority over their opposition, however rallies were still competitive and the usual player energy and enthusiasm, which is so associated with this event, was evident throughout the day. Special mention must go to UWS, competing in their first ever SSS Cup, who played with great spirit throughout the day and deserved their win over Abertay.
With a hard fought 25-23, 21-16 win over their close rivals St Andrews, Edinburgh reclaimed the SSS Trophy, which has eluded them for the past three years.
The first round of the Men’s Cup at St Andrews produced some competitive matches, with Ayrshire College pushing Edinburgh close in a narrow 22-25, 21-25 defeat. However results went to form, with two fascinating East v West semi-finals set up for next Sunday in Dundee: St Andrews v Strathclyde and Dundee v Glasgow. These matches will be played alongside the John Syer Trophy Finals at the Institute of Sport and Exercise (fbs 1000hrs).
Congratulations to all teams, coaches and players for producing some excellent competition and representing their institutions so well on Sunday.
