The 2015/16 Scottish Volleyball League season kicked off this Saturday with
a bang in the Men’s Premier Division.
2014/15 League Champions South Ayrshire set out to defend their title against a very strong City of Glasgow Ragazzi, knowing this was going to be a real test of character for the defending champions. After COG Ragazzi took a 2-1 lead, the Ayrshire team fought back convincingly in the fourth set before taking the 5th set 15-11 and a tough 3-2 victory. Last year’s Runners up Glasgow Mets were looking to start the campaign with a strong display against promoted NUVOC in Edinburgh but during a scrappy match, the Edinburgh side completed a 3-0 victory 26-24, 26-24, 25-23. City of Edinburgh Men ensured they started the season with a victory against their Edinburgh rivals Edinburgh Jets. City were strong in first 2 sets but allowed Jets to pull back the 3rd but ensured they closed out the match 3-1.
In the Women’s Premier Division defending champions City of Edinburgh started their season against an opponent who has looked strong in the pre-season matches, Edinburgh Jets. Jets though were missing 2 of their starting 7 which made it tough to push City and the 3-0 score line gave them a great start. Su Ragazzi travelled to Troon in a rivalry spanning many a year but the Glasgow side were too strong for the Ayrshire side winning 3-0. Newly promoted NUVOC started their Premier campaign off well with a good 3-0 victory against Aberdonia at home.
In Men’s League 1, Dundee faced off against Bon Accord in what turned out to be a great spectacle for the 2nd tier of the Men’s game. Both teams went for it knowing only a victory was good enough but it was the team from the Granite City that came away with a 3-2 victory. The young guns from City of Edinburgh II had a tough start to the season losing 3-0 to a strong Bellshill side in South Queensferry. Su Ragazzi II overcame Lenzie in the other match for the second week in a row with a confident 3-0 victory to start the season with a solid win.
In Women’s League 1, Dundee overcame Su Ragazzi II in convincing fashion with a 3-0 while Edinburgh Jets II repeated the same score line over Glasgow International.
