South Ayrshire enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Glasgow Mets II in an exciting finale to the Thistle Bowl competition.
South started each set in the same manner, racing into comfortable and ultimately unassailable leads to complete a thorough victory of their Glaswegian opposition. While the Mets created good opportunities to score, they were repelled by stubborn defensive work led by the South Ayrshire libero Liam Fleming.
With the strong defence and powerful scoring spikes of Ross McKelvie, they were able to maintain consecutive scores despite the loud vocal support of some junior Mets fans that could be heard over the din of the horns, clapping and music between points.
There was a comical incident of note in the second set seeing numerous Mets players fall over each other, in an attempt to save the ball, duly rounded off with a “pile-on” to great amusement of fans, players and officials alike.
All in all an enjoyable contest with great resoect being shown between each team, a great advert for the finals weekend and very much in-keeping with the spirit of the day.
So it finished with South Ayrshire lifting the Thistle Bowl and their coach Iain Parker being named as Coach of the Year. The following match provides the South Ayrshire II Men’s team to make it a double for the club. Match report of their encounter with Su Ragazzi II to follow.
