Sainsbury’s School Games 2014 – DAY TWO

Day one saw some epic performances from our young Scottish athletes.

Today saw the culmination of the group stage of the competition to decide who would compete for what in Sunday’s finals.

In the girls competition the west girls found the early start a challenge as they struggled to reach the extremely high standards they had set the previous day losing to England Cadets. However, thanks to the teams great performance on Day one a win over Northern Ireland would secure a spot in the gold medal match. The team delivered an impressive performance of controlled volleyball to win 2-0.

Our east girls put in a cracking performance against England Juniors taking them all the way in the first set. It was great to see such a new, young team come together with a positive team spirit and playing such brilliant volleyball. Their most important game of the day was also against Northern Ireland, the combination of Louise Agius and Claudia Hendry proved unstoppable as part of a good team performance as the girls won 2-0. They’ll take on England Juniors for Bronze.

The boy’s teams started the day with a game against each other, the match was started with an emotional and well received minutes applause for young Jordan McKay, who represented Scotland at the school games in 2009 before being tragically killed last month. The game was played to an impressively high level with Scotland West coming out with the straight sets victory.

The East Boys were left needing a victory against Wales to ensure they finished 3rd in the pool. A dominant performance from the guys ensured that this was never in question and they will take on England Cadets in Sunday’s medal matches. The team were very impressive against the English side on Day one and will be looking for a repeat perforamance to bring home a medal.

The West boys were looking to inflict further pain on the English teams and duly delivered. A mature and composed performance to dispose of England Cadets in straight sets. The Boys will contest the gold medal match against England Junior who they lost to 19-17 in ther tie-break on day one. What a re-match that will be!

What became more prominate as the games went on was the team spirit and the way the players in each team were willing to support each other on and off the court. The teams are in good spirits and are very much looking forward to Sunday’s Finals.
