The forthcoming season sees the introduction of two new teams to National competition. Beacon Phoenix (Women) has entered the Scottish Cup and Beacon Flame take on the challenge of Division 2 East (Men) of the National League. The addition of these teams marks the return of Beacon ladies to national competition after a 10 year break. In addition Beacon VC now has two teams in the Men’s National League for the first time in the clubs history. Beacon Fire completes the roster with the team taking a step up to Division 1 (Men).
To celebrate this achievement the club members unanimously agreed to rename each team, leading to the creation of Fire, Flame and Phoenix. Despite these changes the club remains firmly part of Granite City Volleyball. This relationship continues to see close working between the clubs. This includes joint training sessions, joint squad selection, sharing of match officiating and player movement between teams.
Beacon Phoenix has competed at District level for a number of seasons, seeing them more often than not compete for first place. This year’s squad brings together a mix of Beacon regulars and new recruits from various nations. The squad believes this is the right time to enter the Scottish Cup and all are excited at the prospect of meeting Glasgow International in their first cup match on the 9th November.
Beacon Fire is looking ahead to the huge challenge of playing Volleyball in division 1. This has created a real buzz within the club and players are working very hard to secure their place in the starting line up. The team has lost a couple of players to work/family commitments but are delighted to welcome a number of new experienced recruits. The team has taken on an additional weekly training session to ensure they are prepared as possible for the opening match against Edinburgh Jets on the 28th September.
The promotion of Beacon Fire to division 1 created a great opportunity to introduce a second team to National competition. Step forward – Beacon Flame. The team has been established to give experience to junior players coming through and to allow experienced players to get a good run out. Players from Aberdeen Grammar School, Beacon and Bon Accord have all been recruited to establish a diverse squad. The Division 2 East looks to be a tough league and the team are itching to get their season underway against Bellshill on the 28th September.
