It was business as usual in the Lynch Sports Centre in Dundee for the S4/6 Festival on February 26th. Teams were late, a team withdrew at 8.45, everyone then had fun and improved as the day went on. At 4.00pm McDonald’s, Burger King and KFC were invaded by lots of very tired and hungry volleyball players! It was a round robin format in the morning with the boys in 3 pools and the girls all playing each other. The games were short but every team was working out how to control the ball and win the game.
Queensferry High was the top team in the boys’ hall with a huge amount of experience and sophistication in their play. Kinross High made a huge improvement from last year and started to win games. Gordon Schools had calmness in their play and newcomers Aberdeen Grammar used their height to great advantage. In the girls’ hall Marr College, Queensferry and Belmont House, who had also improved greatly from last year, were the top sides.
The lunch break was the briefest ever, with’ lunch on the hoof’ for some teams! There were no burgers at this point in the day. It was back to the action and in Pool 1 Marr College ‘A’ came out on top after some exciting play with Marr ‘B’ then Belmont House ‘A’ in third. Pool 2 was so close there were 3 sides tied on 7 points but Marr ‘C’ had won more points than Woodfarm and Marr ‘D’ to take second place.
The boys’ event had three pools again in the afternoon and Belmont House ‘B’ triumphed in pool 3. Kinross High was the all-conquering side in pool 2 with wins over Penicuik and Aberdeen Grammar. Queensferry High proved too strong in pool 1 and remained unbeaten throughout the day. It was a three-way tie for second place with Belmont House ‘A’, Gordon Schools and Woodfarm ‘A’ all on 8 points.
It was an exciting day and congratulations to all for their efforts whether a player, coach, teacher or bus driver. I hope you all found it an enjoyable and inspiring to increase you involvement and come back next year for another try!
