The first award of the Scottish Volleyball season is up for grabs this weekend as all attention turns to Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility for the finals of the Top Teams Cup.
The format of the Scottish Cup has the Division One teams receiving a bye to the first knockout round. They have the opportunity to test their mettle early in the season with the goal of gaining early boasting rights in the hunt for honours.
Although the Top Teams Cup is played over a group format to qualify for the final, it’s really a knockout of a competition. With only the two group winners going through, it’s very difficult to bounce back from a reversal of any kind.
The Women’s Final (12.30pm FBS) will see last years finalists Troon Team Ayrshire take on last year’s League Champions City of Edinburgh in a repeat of the National League playoff final. With Troon holding a 2 victory lead over the capital side in the National League, form would show the way of the Ayrshire side. City of Edinburgh will feel that they are now starting to hit some form with a big victory over Su Ragazzi last weekend. Captains Elaine Krawczyk and Jen Thom will be trying to rally their troops to ensure they take the first silverware of the season.
The Men’s Final (2.30pm FBS) is the first match in a crucial double header between the finalists City of Edinburgh and Kilmarnock Blaze. In a repeat of last year’s mammoth 5 set encounter, both teams will be determined to not only win both matches to go into the Christmas break at the top of the league, but also showing superiority over their opponents in the silverware stakes.
Both matches are set to be a vision of high quality volleyball in Scotland and a good way for the teams to show the progress they have made already this season.
With the spectacular new facility at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility hosting the finals, thislooks certain to be a high quality day of volleyball. We hope you can show your support of Scottish Volleyball and the teams by attending this excellent day of volleyball.
