Scottish Volleyball’s Referee Commission are delighted to announce the introduction of a new program whereby we will work with a group of talented referees to improve their knowledge, skills and art of refereeing. For the younger members of the group, there will also be an additional focus on honing their skills with the potential of being supported by the Referee Commission in attending a European International Referee Candidate Course. For Scottish Volleyball, this will help to expand our pool of referees available for the appointment system and hopefully improve the overall level of refereeing within our national leagues.
Candidates will be invited to join the programme by the Referee Commission and will be expected to commit to:
- online training sessions,
- peer discussions
- refereeing a minimum number of matches (6) within the appointment system
- supporting the referee commission in running Grade 4 referee courses
In the early stages, it is proposed to have a single group of referees with a focus on both indoor and beach volleyball. With a lot of overlap between both disciplines, this is felt the most appropriate way to proceed. However, should candidates wish to express their desire to follow one route or the other, this will be possible.
Whilst there will be a focus on the selected group of referees, we will also endeavour to ensure that material is available to all Scottish Volleyball’s members thus allowing those keen to progress their own, or their clubs’, refereeing ability to do so.
The group of candidates is currently being finalised within the Referee Commission and invitations will be sent out to candidates in the coming weeks.
