In 2022, Scottish Volleyball were approved as the host nation for the CEV U-20 Women’s European Championships 2024 by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). Since then, Scottish Volleyball has been working tirelessly to ensure that all coordination and planning has been in place to make these championships the best experience for our young athletes and to provide a future performance platform for all our national team developments after the Championships were concluded.
A major part of the planning for Scottish Volleyball was the overall budget that was initially agreed with CEV and with us as an organisation in early 2022. High inflation has caused spiralling costs for all of Scottish Volleyball’s suppliers which has in turn increased costs for us as the Host Nation. A full risk assessment was completed in April 2023 based on renewed quotes from all suppliers, and as a result, the Board of Scottish Volleyball met in May 2023 to discuss the feasibility of Scotland continuing as the Host Nation.
The Scottish Volleyball Board has made the exceedingly difficult decision to withdraw Scotland as the host nation for the CEV U-20 Women’s European Championships 2024. This decision has been communicated to CEV and FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) and has been accepted.
Scottish Volleyball is deeply disappointed that we have had to make this decision, however on a more positive note, we have already begun the process of replacing the planned CEV U-20 Championships with another exciting opportunity for the players, again to be held in Scotland and in July/August 2024. Further details of this event shall be communicated later in the 2023-24 season with opportunities alongside the event for developing coaches and referees.
