The Broughty Ferry leg of the Scottish Beach Tour was a day of glorious weather and big upsets.
In the men’s tournament, first seeds Stewart Caldwell and Fraser Dunlop were dumped out of the tournament by the duo of Peter Hockey and Tom Zavrel in the quarter finals stages. After winning the rest of their matches, the top seeds finished fifth.
Second seeds Marc McLaughlin and Dimitris Challoumis lost a razor thin three set semifinal against old hands Barry McGuigan and Graham Riddle. The multi-time Scottish Champions came off a four year layoff, and went on to defeat the young and hard working pairing of Callum Stewart and Mitchell Brown by two sets to nil in the final.
Over in the women’s contest, Commonwealth Games star Mel Coutts lost her first ever Scottish Tour game. Playing with Aberdeen University student Anastasia Schreiber, they were overcome in a tight three set semifinal by a superb performance by Anna Fischer and Julia Schreiber. Brimming with confidence after their victory, they overcame fellow finalists Magdalena Dylik and Dorka Waluezczyk in a well-fought end to the day.
A huge thanks to all those who turned up early to help set up and stayed late to help break down – Sean, Petr, Kieran, Tom, Juan, Giedrus, Iggy, Anna, Julia, Magda, Bianca, Hanna, Tom and Peter, and a few others I’m probably rudely forgetting. Without people like you these events couldn’t take place. Finally, thanks to Gerry MacDonald for doing a peerless job running the event.
