CPD Coaching Clinic 1 – Serve Reception

Coaching Clinic on Serve Reception 25/9/13 Calderhead High School

Last week was the first on a series of coaching CPD opportunites running throughout the 2013/14 season.

The CPD clinics are linked to the Scottish Men’s National team practice schedule and provide aspiring and existing internationalists the opportunity to practice more regularly.

The focus of the clinic was on Serve reception technique and was attended by players from Su Ragazzi, Glasgow Mets and Stirling University VC as well as coaches from Dundee VC, Stirling University & Perth VC.

The main themes of the session centred round balance, rhythm of movement and quality of the passing platform.

From my experience as a coach many of the errors made on serve reception come from the failure to pick up the flight of the ball early enough and as a result the passers tend to be reactive, not proactive, in preparing to recieve the ball. As a result we spent some time on queue recognition and speed of footwork.

The FIVB have a good video resource for technical models from the 2012 Olympic Games here.  Coaches should look at the Complex 1 series for the Serve Reception Clips per rotation

In the end the passers worked very well and the clinic was a huge success. The next clinic in the series is on the 23rd October and will focus on Block Defence.

I look forward to seeing you there
