[King & Queen of the Beach Results 2013]
KQOB always has a different atmosphere as each competitor is playing for themselves, but equally has to play with, communicate with and get along with many different people throughout the competition, which makes for a very sociable atmosphere and really chilled out as a result.
The women’s competition saw some close matches with everyone seeming to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Nicola McKenzie emerged as the runner-up for the second year running, with Gillian Lyall amassing the most points by a considerable margin and being crowned Queen of the Beach 2013.
In the men’s competition, Jack McKeown and Jamie Salvin emerged joint top in pool 1 in an extremely close pool with only 2 points separating the first 3 teams. In pool 2 Colin Paterson, last year’s runner-up, and Ioannis Panaiotakis made it through to the final.
The final 4 saw some good match-ups and great banter, with Ioannis and Jack coming joint runner-up scoring exactly the same number of points. The winner of the title King of the Beach 2013, dropping only a single point in the final group of matches, was Colin Paterson.
The after party was just as good as the event itself with some beautiful displays by mother nature and some great chat.

[St Andrews Mixed Event Results 2013]
Sunday morning brought light rain, however that didn’t put off our hardy bunch of beach volleyball mixed teams who all turned up bright and early and eager to play.
This is the first time we have managed to run this event and it was a great success so will become a regular fixture the day after King and Queen of the Beach.
In the mixed 4-a-side event we had 4 teams who battled it out for the much coveted prizes, playing a round-robin series of matches to seed the teams then semi-finals and finals.
In the round-robin matches, Team Skittles came out top seeds, beating every team to face Panthers in the semi-final. Skittles won that 21-9, 21-12. The second semi-final saw Saints play A Tribute to Kevin Sorbo, which Saints took 21-10, 21-14.
The final saw Saints overturn the morning defeat to beat Skittles and take the inaugural Mixed St Andrews 4-a-side title.
In the 2-a-side mixed event, some of the KQOB participants the day before stayed to party and to play in the mixed event the next day. There was some great beach volleyball on display, and some close matches. The final saw local youngsters Colin and Shelly Paterson take on Mariusz Chudzik and Lilian Lieber from Aberdeen. There were some great plays and pickups from both teams, however the consistency and power of the Aberdeen pair saw them through to win the match and the tournament 21-14, 21-16.
Thank you to everyone who helped set up and take down equipment. Everyone who does just a little bit of that helps an event organiser enormously, so thank you all. Another cracking weekend down the beach!
