The season ‘served off’ this Saturday with numerous local derbies and tense matches.
City of Edinburgh hosted Edinburgh Jets in the Men’s Division 1 and managed to come back from a set down to win 3-1. Coach Barry McGuigan commented ‘It took a while to bed down, Paul Glissov proved a challenge to contend with, however, we managed to establish our block defence and gradually took control of the match’. Other results in this division saw City of Glasgow Ragazzi win the Glasgow derby 3-0 over Glasgow Mets, Kilmarnock Blaze came out on top 3-0 in the West Coast derby against South Ayrshire and finally Bon Accord came back from a set down to win 3-1 against Dundee.
Women’s Division 1 produced a couple of 5 set thrillers. NUVOC fought hard against Su Ragazzi but eventually lost out 3-2. Rachel Nicol from NUVOC said about the match ‘A brilliant start to the season and the team are very happy at how it went today. We nearly caused an upset in our first match, here’s looking forward to next’. Aberdonia in their first game in Division 1 took NLVC to 5 sets and managed to edge out the more experienced team from Lanarkshire in the 5th set. Title contender’s City of Edinburgh and Troon Team Ayrshire both won their opening matches at home. Edinburgh beat Edinburgh Jets 3-1 and Troon beat South Ayrshire 3-0.
Men’s Division 2 East started with a 5 set clash with the other match proving to be equally as tough for all teams. City of Edinburgh II managed to hold on to their nerve and defeated Edinburgh Jets II 3-2 while NUVOC won their opening fixture 3-1 against Edinburgh Jets III.
Glasgow Mets II opened their campaign in Division 2 West with a 3-0 win against Glasgow rivals Su Ragazzi II. Bellshill Cardinals won 3-0 against Lenzie with South Ayrshire II winning 3-0 against Kilmarnock II.
In women’s Division 2 a great start for Dundee over title contenders Glasgow International with a 3-1 away victory and a win for Kyle Team Ayrshire 3-0 over South Ayrshire II completed the results for Saturday 29th September.
Congratulations to all clubs and teams and welcome to the start of what is shaping up to be a fantastic season!
