Spikers Strike Silver

Sunday evening saw competitive volleyball return to Bell’s Sports Centre with the season kicking off with the Premier League Cup competition.

Two sections of four teams played each other for the four semi-final places with the Odd Bods team being made up from players who turned up after last week’s press request to make up a spare team.

League champions Kinross Scotrange opened against Colin McGinley’s Team Fife with the Kinross side being minus influential Craig Donaldson and Roy Munro. The opening play was evenly matched with the score progressing to 8 points each. Scotrange then opened up a gap which they maintained until full time to record victory.

On court two Les and his mates made up the Odd Bods side who took on Iain Cook’s Misfits. The Odd Bods took some time to settle and by that time it was too late as Misfits had established a comfortable lead which they held on to for a well deserved win.
Ian McGrath’s Mental Blocks played Nikki McWilliams Hitting Bricks in a closely contested local derby which saw Bricks just pip their local rivals.

Back on court two Jamie Salvin’s Dodgy Spikers started well against Carlo Fiorentini’s Kintronics side but the Kinross outfit with Jill McLachlan and young Mitchell Brown in their ranks fought back to level things at 21 points each before Spikers put in a final spurt to finish on top.

Scotrange blasted Hitting Bricks from the off but Bricks battled back mid way through the set but the momentum changed again with the Kinross side finishing with a comfortable win.
The Misfits game against Kintronics was closely contested right to the end with the score tied at 29 points each with a minute to play. It was Misfits who edged victory 31-29 to guarantee qualification to the semis.

Mental Blocks kept their qualification hopes alive with a win against Team Fife but blew it all in their next game against Scotrange with poor finishing in the latter half of the game. Hitting Bricks also disposed of Team Fife to claim the second semi-final slot behind Scotrange.

Dodgy Spikers made sure of finishing top of their section with two fine victories against Odd Bods and Misfits. Kintronics also defeated Odd Bods to finish third in their section.

Court one hosted Scotrange versus Misfits and the Kinross side stormed ahead 11-3 with Jackson Brown and Jamie Booth scoring freely for the Kinross side before Misfits fought back to within touching distance at 17-18 but it was to no avail as Scotrange again established a lead which saw them finish well ahead to qualify for the final.

Court two’s semi-final between Dodgy Spikers and Hitting Bricks was a close encounter with the score rising to eleven points each before Spikers scored five points without reply.  Bricks kept within touching distance with the score at 25-26 but a final surge by Spikers saw them secure their place in the final.

The final between Scotrange and Dodgy Spikers was neck and neck until the scores reached 18 points each. At that point Spikers went on a scoring run with which the Kinross side couldn’t cope and that was enough to hold on for a fairly comfortable victory in the end for Spikers to lift the first silverware of the new season.

And so the first silverware of the season goes to Jamie Salvin’s Dodgy Spikers.

This Sunday sees the Recreational League sides play their league cup competition and it is good to see two new teams take to the floor for the first time Jayne Cafferty’s Hits and Giggles and Andrew Stewart’s team consisting mainly of Perth High School former pupils. Again there is a space for non-attached players to come along and play recreational volleyball under the banner of the “Odd Bods” team.

The twelve teams will be divided into three sections of four teams with each game being one set of 20 minutes continuous scoring. Section one includes league champions Kinross BB who will be looking to win back the trophy after last season’s defeat in the final. Motley Crew look favourites to top section two with See Me pitched in with the new teams in section three.

There is still time to enter teams in both the Premier and Recreational Leagues with the competition commencing after the school October holidays. Anyone wishing to enter either the Premier or Recreational League this season should contact fixture secretary Dave Munro or e-mail via the PKDVA website.
