The Olympic Torch is lit in ancient Olympia in Greece using the power of the sun. It then arrives in the UK on 18 May 2012. The flame represents peace, unity and friendship. It will be carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers during the Olympic Torch Relay during a 70-day journey across the country. The route has been planned so that the Flame will come within an hour of 95 percent of people in the UK.
LOCOG are looking for people to nominate someone to carry the torch or apply themselves. Initially all applications go into a ballot. A number then go onto a selection process. People will then be chosen on the basis of their personal story being able to inspire millions of people watching the Olympic Torch Relay around the world. This could be someone who has volunteered tirelessly for many years, someone who has reached a high level of performance in volleyball or someone who has struggled against adversity for example.
